I Feel So USA Right Now: the Americana Trend

Patriotism can creep up on you when you least expect it. Like when the Football World Cup is on (because this time might really be England’s time! – surely?) or when there’s a royal celebration (who didn’t wait in anticipation for Kate Middleton to exit the Lindo wing with baby George?) and well, that’s about it really. But when it does, it pulls you in with pride and makes you want to bust out some crumpets, scoff a roast dinner, and wash it all down with a pint of gin whilst singing God Save The Queen. But feeling patriotic for our friends across the pond? That’s so very non-British.

Yet fashion has a funny way of making us embrace different things, and NYFW’s display of US pride has seemingly seeped out of the 4th of July, pancakes with bacon, and Super Bowl Sunday into the mainstream global fashion scene. Yes, the Americana trend is shining brighter than the stars (and stripes, for that matter.)

Proof that you need not smother yourself in the US flag to nail the aesthetic, this outfit is all about simple styling techniques to get your patriotic palette on point. Red neckerchief, white (okay, I opted for a snug grey sweatshirt instead) and bright blue denim pull this look together without looking too costume – or too Marc Jacobs (if you can ever be too Marc Jacobs). A touch of star-spangled accessories wouldn’t go amiss, but if that’s a little too Uncle Sam for you, a splash of silver (the Topshop shoes add just the right amount of glitz to the mix) and you’re approximately four months early for independence day celebrations.

It’s loud, it’s proud, it’s so very American (and so very un-British) – but that’s perhaps what makes it so much fun?
