After seeing lots of posts online about the black

After seeing lots of posts online about the black square from yesterday, I’ve decided to archive the one on my page - I think it was meant in good faith but like others, I’m worried the movement turned somewhat performative and with the inclusion of the black lives matter hashtag, it was censoring a lot of important BLM information. Instead I wanted to share a resource I’m going to be using over the upcoming months - this illustration of an anti-racism bookshelf. Books have the ability to teach so much and make you FEEL so much. But I promise I won’t stop just at the literature I read.

The message behind the black squares was important but this is not and never should be just a social media trend. This a message we take into our lives from going forward. Things I will do include educating myself using books written by black authors (the positive books, happy ones and the ones that’ll make me realise things I perhaps wanted to pretend didn’t exist), reading up on the missing parts parts we didn’t get taught in school, I’m going to look at how I can better what I do online for my incredible black followers. I’ll share and post more from my fave black creators. I will continue to share important information with you guys too. I will also continue calling out the people in my lives who make jokes at the expensive of black lives. It’s not funny. Those who take from black culture when they want to but refuse to leave behind their racist remarks when it suits them.
I’ll keep shouting about change because I’m white, privileged, and I should use it for good. I’m not doing it to be “woke” or feel like a better person than others, I’m doing it because it’s the right thing to do and hope others will too.
This isn’t going to be comfortable and it’s not going to be easy. As white creators with a platform it’s very likely we’ll get criticised for what we post not being quite right or saying something wrong - but this is a way that we’ll learn. And I think it’s only a small cross to bear in the grand scheme of things... illustration by @jane_mount!

If you’re not angry, you’re not paying attention. Last weeks terrible news has served as a wake up call to so many and proved that there is always more that white people can do to help support black lives. Changes can start IRL, in our friendship circles. Challenge any racist terminology or jokes that you hear used. Don’t stand for excuses of “oh I didn’t mean it” “oh well my best friend is black so it doesn’t matter” “well if they can use the N word in rap music and to each other when talking then why can’t I??” (That last one gets me SO much. The level of privilege it takes to ignore the history of this word...) small actions that seem “harmless” and “mean nothing” just normalises racism, allows inequality to thrive, and will forever hold others back. It systematically reinforces negative views and stereotypes. Take the time to educate yourself (it can be scary and destabilising recognising the privilege that comes with the colour of our skin. White privilege does not mean you haven’t struggled, it just means that your life hasn’t been extra hard because of the colour of your skin) sign the petitions. Read the books you need to (I’m going to share some in my stories today) open your mind and open your heart. I’ve shared ways you can help as a white British person over on my stories this weekend and I’ll be sharing more too. Use the outrage, shock and anger we have over George Floyd to fuel change for a better future where discrimination and racism no longer exists 💙 we cannot tolerate this any longer and we must fight for a better world #blacklivesmatter
